Increase your focus on the Qur.aan in Ramadhaan

Ibraaheem said:

al-Aswad ibn Yazeed would complete [reading] the Qur.aan every two days during Ramadhaan, and he would sleep between maghrib and ‘ishaa.

And in other than Ramadhaan, he would complete [reading] the Qur.aan every six days.

Translator’s note:
While from one angle this worship is something praiseworthy, it must be noted that adhering to the Sunnah takes precedence, as it has been authentically reported that the Prophet (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) prohibited ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Umar (radhi-yAllaahu ‘anhumaa) from reading the entire Qur.aan in less than three days and nights, as he (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

«Whoever reads the [entire] Qur.aan in less than three [days and nights] has not understood it» – Saheeh Abu Daawood, No.1394

And commenting on this, Shaykh al-Albaanee said:

“And what has been reported about some of the salaf [which is] in opposition to the authentic Sunnah does not contradict it, since it is apparent that it (the above narration) had not reached them.” – Silsilatul-Ahaadeeth as-Saheehah – Volume 5, Page 601

I took myself to [emulating] what ar-Rabee’ had narrated about ash-Shaafi’ee, that he would complete [reading] the Qur.aan sixty times during Ramadhaan, [and this was] other than what he would recite during the prayer.

So the most I was able to do was to complete [reading the Qur.aan] fifty nine times, and thirty times during other than Ramadhaan.

Question: I am a housewife, and don’t [go out to] work; most of my time is spent with looking after my children and tending to my husband. And whilst I am in the kitchen, I listen to the [recitation of the] Qur.aan; so am I rewarded for any of that?

Response: Yes; you are rewarded – and all Praise is due to Allaah [alone] – for what you do in your home in looking after your children and tending to your husband. And, [in addition], you are also rewarded for listening to the [recitation of the] Qur.aan.

Question: A man embraced Islaam, and the time for prayer arrived – but he had not [yet] memorised any of the Qur.aan, and needed some time to do so. So is it permissible for him to pray as he is, or is he required to memorise some [verses of the] Qur.aan [first]?

Response: He should [just] pray with [the rest of] the Muslims. He should pray along with them, even if he has not yet memorised any [verses] of the Qur.aan; [most importantly], he must not leave the prayer. And if there is no-one to pray along with, then he should pray as he is, and just recite some words of remembrance. If he has a copy of the Qur.aan – he can read that, otherwise he should suffice with saying [الحمد لله], and [لا إله إلا الله], and [الله أكبر] throughout the prayer.

He was the most humblest of all the people

[Regarding al-’Imaad al-Maqdisee], adh-Dhiyaa said:

He would remain in the main masjid of the city from [the time of] Fajr until [the time of] ‘Ishaa, not leaving other than for a need. He would teach the people and have them read the Qur.aan to him. And when they would finish, he would [turn to] occupy himself in prayer. So I asked the Shaykh, Muwaffaq ad-Deen [ibn Qudaamah al-Maqdisee], about him.

And he said:

He was the best of our companions, and the one from whom the most benefit was sought.

He was the most humblest of them, and the most patient of them in teaching [the people].

He was a caller to the Sunnah, and remained in Damascus for a while, teaching the poor, and having them recite [the Qur.aan] to him. He would feed them, and remain humble with them; he was the most humblest of [all] the people.

He would censure himself out of his fear of Allaah; I do not know that I ever saw anyone more fearful [of Allaah] than him.

He would prolong his bowing and prostration, and supplicate aplenty – asking [only] of Allaah.

Reading the Qur.aan whilst on menses or in a state of major sexual impurity

Reference: Sharh ‘Umdatil-Fiqh – Tape No.7, Question No.29

Question: Is it permissible for the menstruating woman and the one in the state of major sexual impurity to read the Qur.aan from memory without touching the Qur.aan?

Response: The menstruating woman should not read the Qur.aan, except in two situations – for which the scholars have issued a fatwa; and they are:

1) for the sake of an exam, which she would otherwise miss;
2) for when she fears she will forget what she has already memorised, so she needs to revise so she does not forget it.

And other than that, she must not read the Qur.aan until she completes her menses and has a bath [or shower].

Question: [What is the ruling regarding] reading the Qur.aan during the tawaaf and the sa’ee, whilst doing ‘umrah on behalf of my mother?

Response: There is no harm in that; you can supplicate to Allaah (Jalla wa ‘Alaa) during the tawaaf with legislated supplications – and that is best, or you can read the Qur.aan. You may also remain silent for the duration of the tawaaf – without supplicating, and your tawaaf is sound. However, [by doing so] you have left a recommended act from those which have been recommended for during the tawaaf – and that is to supplicate during it.

Sa’eed ibn Jubayr said:

Indeed, khashyah is to have fear and apprehension of Allaah, such that your fear and apprehension of Him is a cause of preventing you from sin; that there is [the true essence of] khashyah.

And dhikr is obedience to Allaah, and whoever obeys Allaah, then he has remembered Him, and whoever does not obey Him, then he is not one who remembers [Him], even if he exerts himself in glorifying Allaah and the recitation of the Qur.aan.

Question: He has a desire to understand matters of the religion, tajweed and tafseer – and wants [some] guidance; so do you advise him with any particular books [to start with]?

Response: Firstly my brother, [start with] reading the Qur.aan; find someone who will help you in reading, because [learning how to read] the Qur.aan can only be achieved by being taught directly. It is imperative that you have a teacher who is proficient in reciting [the Qur.aan]; so you read to him and he will guide you and help you with that. [Always begin with] seek[ing] aid from Allaah, then when you start reading the Qur.aan with a proficient teacher, he will help you with tajweed and the correct pronunciation – and [all of] this is indeed a blessing from Allaah.

As for tafseer and fiqh, then find a scholar whose knowledge you are assured of, so he can guide you and help you with what you need, and assist you with choosing the appropriate subjects which will help you for the future.

Question: Is it permissible to read a soorah from the Qur.aan with the intention that its reward be [destined] for the deceased? And how would that be?

Response: There is nothing from the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) which suggests the permissibility of gifting the reward of reading the Qur.aan to the deceased; such as those who read [soorah] al-Faatihah upon the soul of the deceased – then there is no origin for this.

You should read the Qur.aan, then supplicate to Allaah for yourself and for your [deceased] Muslim brother.

As for gifting the reward of reading [the Qur.aan to the deceased], then there is no evidence to suggest the Messenger of Allaah (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) did this.
